Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — State authorities have begun an investigation into a construction site structure collapse that left one dead and two injured. The collapse of a large metal structure happed at an under-construction hotel site in Costa Mujeres.
According to authorities, the collapse happened at the H10 hotel Wednesday afternoon killing one worker. A 12-meter tall metal structure reportedly collapsed, hitting several workers. Killed was 53 year old José Roberto “C”. He was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit in the head by the falling metal.
One of the injured is reported to be 25 year old José Alejandro “C” who was transferred to hospital with a hip fracture. The identity of the second injured worker is unknown.
In a statement, the State Attorney General (FGE) said they have “started of an investigation to clarify the events where one person lost his life and two more were injured after the fall of a structure in a construction site in Costa Mujeres, in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres.
“Personnel from this Social Representation are carrying out the collection of evidence at the scene of the events, which will be integrated into the investigation file in order to determine the cause of this mishap.”
The Municipal Civil Protection Coordination of Isla Mujeres proceeded to close the Costa Mujeres construction site following the accident. Carlos Gamboa Ortiz, Director of Isla Mujeres Civil Protection, said they are conducting an exhaustive investigation to determine the safety and compliance with work regulations.
Gamboa Ortiz said that since municipal government personnel were the first responders, as established by protocol, contact was immediately established with the State Coordination of Civil Protection of Quintana Roo and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
He says they are working in close coordination with the other agencies to determine the cause of the accident and possible corresponding sanctions.
On social media, Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde sent her condolences “regarding the collapse at the construction site of the H10 hotel in Costa Mujeres, which unfortunately left one worker dead and three people injured.
“The Municipal Coordination of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Isla Mujeres reported that since they became aware of the incident, they went to the site where together with elements of the Isla Mujeres Police, they are working in a coordinated manner with the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and the State Coordination of Civil Protection of Quintana Roo to find the cause and determine the corresponding sanctions.
“The head of the Municipal Coordination of Civil Protection, Carlos Gamboa Ortiz, reported that at this time, an exhaustive investigation is being carried out to determine the safety of the worksite, which is why it was closed. We regret this accident and send our condolences to the family of the victim.”
