Cancun, Q.R. — The driver and passenger inside a pickup that collided with a cement truck were killed Tuesday evening. The two vehicle crash happened around 6:30 p.m. on a section of highway behind the Cancun International Airport.

National Guard and emergency medical personnel were at the site of the crash off highway 180 yesterday evening after receiving several motorist reports of the accident. Emergency services arrived to find a small cargo truck partway under the front of a cement truck.
Both the driver and passenger of the cargo pickup truck were found dead in the cab. The driver of the cement truck was transported to Cancun hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
In a briefing Tuesday night, the Cancun Fire Department said they “responded to a vehicle accident on the highway involving two cargo trucks.

Upon arrival, personnel secured the area, coordinating with medical services, Civil Protection and relevant authorities, and awaited instructions for the necessary procedures.
“We reiterate our call to the public to drive with caution, respect speed limits, and maintain a safe following distance, especially on high-traffic roads.”
Not long after, Cancun Civil Protection also released a brief note on the highway accident.

“Traffic Alert Highway 180. Civil Protection in Cancun reports a collision on Highway 180, behind the airport, causing traffic disruptions.

“Authorities are already working at the scene. The public is advised to take alternate routes and drive with caution. Stay informed through official channels.”
According to available information, the driver of the pickup was reported trying to pass another vehicle while driving toward toward Huayacán Avenue . While doing so, he collided head on with the cement truck, sending both vehicles into the ditch.

The front of the cargo truck ended up part way under the industrial cement truck, partially ejecting the passenger. Both men in the cab of the pickup were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not named the deceased.
