Number of pet owners affected by crematorium scam passes 200

Chetumal, Q.R. — More than 200 pet owners have come forward to file complaints against a crematorium for fraud. The State Attorney General’s Office provided the update Monday regarding the Chetumal pet crematorium Xibalbá.

Days after it was revealed that the company was dumping pet bodies in bags in vacant lots, authorities reported finding 150 carcasses in lots around the crematorium. A man and woman have since been arrested and charged.

On Monday, state prosecutor Raciel López Salazar reported that Guillermo Alejandro “N”, owner of the crematorium and Briseidy “N”, his alleged accomplice, have been charged for their involvement in acts possibly constituting the crimes of fraud and usurpation of functions.

He said the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office secured indictments for both individuals for fraud and impersonation. To date, 238 people have filed complaints against them.

Affected pet owners marked a memorial by the lots where the bodies of dogs and cats were found.

The pet crematorium was located in the Barrio Bravo neighborhood of Chetumal where they offered incineration services starting at 1,500 pesos. López Salazar says instead of incineration, the corpses of dogs and cats that the clients brought were put in plastic bags to later be thrown in properties adjacent to the establishment.

Pet owners were then presented with urns of soil instead of the ashes of the animals.

“Guillermo Alejandro “N” acted as the owner of the crematorium, while Briseydi “N” was in charge of receiving payments from clients, as well as organizing commemorative ceremonies,” he explained.

To date, the remains of 180 pets have been found thrown in vacant lots around the crematorium.

“So far, after fieldwork on various properties near the aforementioned establishment, they have found more than 180 pet carcasses, some of which were identified by their owners.”

The current investigation dates back to March of 2022 when they began offering the pet crematorium service, which according to authorities, they were operating without a license.
