NOAA locates new fast moving system heading for Caribbean Sea

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A new system located east of the Windward Islands Sunday morning is forecast to head due west. The system, a tropical wave, is currently located a few hundred miles to the east of the Windward Islands.

According to the National Hurricane Centre, the system is producing showers and thunderstorms and is quickly moving west, however, slow development is expected over the next week as it makes its way to the coast of Quintana Roo.

“Environmental conditions appear generally favorable for some slow development of this system over the next week as the system moves quickly westward at around 20 mph, crossing the Windward Islands early this week and moving into the central and western Caribbean by the mid to latter part of this week,” the NOAA reported early Sunday afternoon.

The new tropical wave developed on the heels of the fourth named storm of the season, which is currently Tropical Storm Debby.

Debby is forecast to gain category 1 hurricane strength before it makes landfall on Florida’s west coast Monday.
