No authorization: Government confirms Royal Caribbean’s Mahahual port project still in assessment stage

Mahahual, Q.R. — Government officials say they are still evaluating Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day Mahahual port project. According to the Ministry of Environment, the company paperwork is still being assessed.

Royal Caribbean’s Costa Maya port project is still being assessed by the Mexican government May 12, 2026.

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) reported that the “Perfect Day” project in Mahahual is still undergoing environmental assessment. According to them, to date, Royal Carribean does not have any environmental authorization for its development, construction or operation.

“The agency is conducting a comprehensive review of the Environmental Impact Statement submitted by the project proponent,” Mexico’s Ministry of Environment said in a May 12 statement.

“As part of the technical process, Semarnat has identified several elements that require specialized analysis, including observations related to planned infrastructure, environmental mitigation measures, and potential impacts on coastal and marine ecosystems.

“The Secretariat also takes into account the more than 14,000 citizen opinions received during the public consultation, as well as the technical information presented by communities, specialists and environmental organizations, including Greenpeace Mexico.”

The Ministry says they are making their environmental decisions based on technical, legal and scientific criteria, prioritizing the protection of ecosystems and public interest.

They say the evaluation process for the Mahahual Perfect Day Royal Caribbean project continues in accordance with current environmental legislation.
