Nine regions in Cancun experience power outage on voting day

Cancun, Q.R. — Several regions in Cancun were affected Sunday due to a lack of electricity. Residents in nine regions voted in the dark after a power failure left one station without electricity.

Residents in Regions 94, 95, 100, 101, 102, 103, 105, 202 and 248 made official complaints to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) Sunday. CFE crews were seen in the area attempting repairs.

One worker said the power failures are from a lack of new transformers. The existing transformers cannot keep up with household demand, which causes overloads and eventually outages.

The Sunday power failure was felt at one of the the Ieqroo voting stations. “It’s dark but we still have to keep working,” said INE (National Electoral Institute) official.

Government workers used a flashlight and their cell phones to light up the area so they could work. On June 1, millions headed to polling stations around the country to vote in Mexico’s first popular election of the Judiciary. On Sunday, judges, magistrates and ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) were democratically elected.
