Mexico City, Mexico — Millions are heading to the polls Sunday to vote in the country’s first popular election of the Judiciary. “It’s in your hands, in your decision, who will be part of the new Judiciary. An honest Judiciary, close to the people,” President Claudia Sheinbaum said Saturday calling on Mexicans to vote.

On June 1, Mexicans across the country will participate in the first popular election of the Judiciary in which judges, magistrates and ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) will be democratically elected.
“It’s in your hands, in your decision, who will form part of the new Judiciary. An honest Judiciary, close to the people, elected not by the President or the legislators, but by the people of Mexico. This is the great transformation our country is undergoing,” she said.
Sheinbaum pointed out that contrary to those who wish to maintain the regime of corruption and privileges within the judiciary with the transformation the country is currently undergoing, Mexicans are the ones who will decide who will administer justice in the country.

Therefore, “it is false to want a Supreme Court of Justice under the leadership of a political party or under the President’s leadership,” she added. “If that had been the case, a reform of the Judiciary like the one in 1999, in which the Federal Executive branch decided who would be ministers, would have been implemented. However, what is now desired is for the people of Mexico to decide.”
In Quintana Roo, dignitaries including municipal mayors and Governor Mara Lezama have already participated in the country’s first Poder Judicial vote.
