New Year’s Day downpour leaves Chetumal waterlogged

Chetumal, Q.R. — Emergency personnel in Chetumal attended to calls of flooded streets after a heavy downpour Wednesday. The state’s capital city spent the first day of the New Year drenched by an arriving cold front.

Cold Front number 20 left a majority of the southern region wet and city streets under water.

In a press release from the State Coordination of Civil Protection, State Civil Protection reported implementing special operations to address flooding due to rain in Chetumal.

Municipal teams activated bilge pumps and cleaning of sewers at various points in the capital. The sudden rains lasted several hours leaving Tomás Aznar and Constituyentes Avenues impassable.

State Coordination of Civil Protection, in coordination with Municipal Civil Protection, the Fire Department and the Secretariat of Citizen Security, implemented a special operation to address Chetumal city flooding Wednesday.

“As part of this operation, two bilge pumps worked the intersection of Tomás Aznar and Constituyentes avenues, managing to reduce the levels of accumulated water in this critical area.

“At the same time, cleaning and dredging of sewers was carried out throughout the capital in order to prevent further damage and guarantee the flow of rainwater.

The Chetumal fire department use a tuck to block a flooded street.

“The authorities involved continue to carry out strategic tours in vulnerable areas of the city to identify and address flooding in a timely manner, reinforcing preventive actions for the safety of citizens,” the state agency reported.
