Bacalar, Q.R. — A new sub-council of 18 members for the management of the Bacalar lagoon has been announced. The council consists of personnel from the Institute of Biodiversity and Natural Protected Areas, as well as citizens.
A total of 18 people from various Quintana Roo sectors make up the new council that will oversee the protection, conservation and management of the Bacalar Lagoon State Ecological Park.
Javier Alberto Carballar Osorio, the General Director of the Institute of Biodiversity, clarified that the Institute has no intention of promoting or creating a new Protected Natural Area in the Bacalar Lagoon.
During the installation of the new sub-council, Bacalar Mayor José Alfredo Contreras Méndez highlighted the importance of the participation of the citizens of Bacalar who live in the areas of influence of the Ecological Park.
He says they are the key stakeholders involved in decision-making, with the goal of strengthening the area’s conservation and preservation strategies. He also emphasized the importance of coordinated action between the federal, state and municipal governments to ensure the success of these efforts.
During the installation, Carballar Osorio emphasized that this sub-council’s primary purpose is to act as a consultative and support body in the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies for the management and oversight of the State Ecological Park.
The new sub-council will also be responsible for proposing strategies for its conservation.

The Área Natural Protegida Parque Ecológico Estatal Laguna de Bacalar was declared a protected area on April 1, 2011, in the Official Gazette of the State of Quintana Roo. It is a crucial area for conservation and environmental awareness among both the community and visitors, as it is home to a rich biodiversity.
