New electric transmission line for Northern Zone underway

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — The construction of a new electric transmission line between Cancun and Puerto Morelos is underway. The 140 hectare expansion project will consist of 82 steel towers at a cost of around 148 million pesos.

The LT Leona Vicario Entq. Dzitnup-Riviera Maya project involves the installation of 22-meter-high towers stretched over 39 kilometers from the Northern Arc of Cancun, passing through the ejidos of Isla Mujeres and Alfredo V. Bonfil, ending at the Leona Vicario SF6 electrical substation in Puerto Morelos.

The project has received approval from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and includes excavation to cement. The National Commission of Protected Natural Areas has recommended that the excavation sites not impact the water table, guaranteeing that they will be kept away from bodies of water.

The project involves the removal of vegetation on 135.58 hectares, of which 7,470 specimens of three plant species will be reforested, while 39 hectares will remain untouched. In addition, measures will be taken to rescue and relocate fauna and flora with environmental protection.

The Leona Vicario-Riviera Maya Transmission Line will have a nominal voltage of 400 kilowatts. The Transmission Line is part of a broader effort to improve the electrical infrastructure in the region and meet the growth in energy demand by reducing power outages in the Northern Zone. CFE has 18 months to construct the new line.
