Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Nearly 200 new doctors from Cuba have been assigned to the state of Quintana Roo with another 30 being sought. Moises Toledo, the Federal Coordinator of IMSS Bienestar in Quintana Roo, explained that the arrival of these health professionals is to cover the need that is required throughout the state.
A total of 173 Cuban doctors have been assigned to areas of Quintana Roo to cover the lack of local health personnel in rural communities. The doctors assigned to the state include family doctors, general care and specialty doctors.
According to Toledo, the Quintana Roo IMSS -Bienestar system is currently waiting for the authorization of 30 more doctors, also from Cuba. “The 30 additional doctors being sought will be assigned to the most remote health centers, joining the brigades of Cuban doctors that are arriving,” he said.
Prior to the arrival of the Cuban doctors, patients in need of immediate attention were left to wait several hours for medical help while others had to make appointments weeks in advance.
The hiring of doctors from Cuba was part of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s project that began in May of 2022 when the Government of Mexico opened over 13,000 medical vacancies around the country.
In an agreement with the Government of Cuba, Mexico hired hundreds of doctors from Cuba to fill the 13,765 medical voids across Mexico.
