Cancun, Q.R. — Authorities evacuated nearly 150 people from a Cancun restaurant Friday night due to a fire. Cancun firemen were sent to an address in the Cancun Hotel Zone in response to a business kitchen fire Friday.
Authorities were called after a hood extractor in the kitchen caught fire. By the time it was out, firemen reported damage had been contained to the extractor and an electric oven. The restaurant was evacuated of its 35 staff and approximately 100 customers while firemen inspected the kitchen.
According to Civil Protection, kitchen staff managed to put the fire out before firemen arrived using extinguishers. There were no injures reported in the Friday night fire.
“The Cancun Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in the kitchen area of a restaurant in the Hotel Zone,” Bomberos Cancun wrote regarding the fire.

“Upon arrival, personnel confirmed a small fire in an exhaust hood. Control and suppression maneuvers were immediately deployed using an attack line, and the fire was completely extinguished.
“As a precaution, the premises was evacuated, ensuring the safety of customers and employees. No injuries were reported. Material damage was reported to kitchen equipment, primarily an exhaust hood and an electric oven.
“It is important to note that restaurant staff acted promptly, using fire extinguishers before the arrival of the firefighters, which helped limit the spread of the fire,” they said.
Cancun Civil Protection also issued a brief note on the afternoon incident. “Timely Response to a Small Fire. Our Civil Protection personnel, in coordination with the Fire Department and relevant authorities, responded to a report of a small fire in the kitchen area of an establishment.
“Upon our arrival, the fire had already been extinguished by the staff, who carried out a precautionary evacuation. Firefighters carried out cooling operations on hoods, griddles, and stoves, while verifying safety conditions.
“As a precautionary measure, approximately 35 employees and about 100 customers were evacuated. No injuries were reported. Recommendations were given to the staff who used fire extinguishers, primarily regarding nasal irrigation and follow-up for any subsequent discomfort.

“We continue working in a coordinated manner to protect the safety of the public and prevent risks.”
