Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Navy personnel have secured a sunken boat off the island of Isla Mujeres. The sinking private vessel was reported to authorities over the weekend when it was seen by island residents taking on water.
The boat, Ilusión, continued to take on water and became sunken by Sunday, prompting authorities to initiate an environment containment mission to avoid water contamination.
Personnel from the Ninth Naval Region responded to the partial-sinking of the private yacht off Isla Mujeres. Early Monday, the Department of Marine Environmental Protection and the Port Authority of Isla Mujeres responded to the report.
A naval team located the sinking Ilusión and carried out a detailed inspection. To prevent environmental damage, an oil containment boom was installed around the boat to prevent water contamination from possible fuel leaks.
According to Navy personnel, the boat is docked at the former Romeo packing plant. The reason for the sinking is unknown. The Harbor Master’s Office has since notified the owner of the boat of the measures he must take to resolve the issues created by his sinking vessel.
