Natural gas powered power plant set for Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — The Institute for Development and Financing of Quintana Roo (IDEFIN) reported the installation of a natural gas-powered power plant. The agency says the plant is expected to be completed in 2025 in the municipality of Puerto Morelos.

Ari Adler Brotman, head of Instituto para el Desarrollo y Financiamiento de Quintana Roo (IDEFIN), says this year, Quintana Roo will have a natural gas-fired power plant to double its current electrical capacity.

The project will consists of the construction of two plants with a capacity of 200 MW each. “We have the technology, an investment group and preliminary authorizations to carry out this sustainable project,” said Adler Brotman.

According to Brotman, authorities were looking to taking advantage of already impacted lands by the Maya Train. He says preliminary work is schedule for the first quarter of 2025 and that the combined cycle gas project will occupy 350 hectares of Puerto Morelos land.

He says once complete, the plant will cover around 6 percent of the state’s energy consumption. The plants will help meet the growing demand for energy in the state, driven by tourism and urban development. If all goes well, the plant could be operational by the end of 2025.
