National Guard arrests passengers carrying narcotics, assault rifle and thousands of rounds at Cancun International

Cancun, Q.R. — National Guard say they intercepted an aircraft carrying narcotics, an assault rifle and thousand of rounds of ammo at the Cancun International Airport. The interception also lead to the arrests of onboard passengers.

On Wednesday, Guardia Nacional reported detaining passengers after detecting illegal objects and substances. In a statement, they said “in compliance with the Mexican Government’s National Security Strategy, members of the National Guard arrested three people in possession of weapons and narcotics.”

The incident happened at Cancun International Airport where National Guard personnel were conducting security and crime prevention inspections in the landing area.

There, they came into contact with a private plane from Guadalajara, Jalisco, from which three people disembarked. Upon inspection inside the aircraft, they discovered the illegal items hidden in the luggage.

National Guard said those illegal items included a 7.62 mm caliber assault rifle, 3,300 useful cartridges, 50 magazines and one drum magazine, five linked belts with 100 5.56 mm caliber cartridges, 32 bags weighing 39 kilograms of apparent narcotics and cash, pending accounting.

Approximately 39 kilos of narcotics were found hidden inside passenger luggage.

“The three individuals were read the Bill of Rights for Persons in Detention, registered in the National Registry of Arrests and, along with the weapons and narcotics, were brought before the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office in the state, where the exact weight and type of drugs will be determined, allowing further investigation,” they reported Wednesday.
