National Forest Commission reports significant reduction in fires across Quintana Roo during 2025 season

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The National Forest Commission says the state’s forest fire season is officially over. In a meeting Tuesday, authorities reported over 6,700 burned hectares of land in 29 fires during the 2025 season.

The Quintana Roo State Civil Protection Coordination (COEPROC) participated in the meeting that officially concluded the 2025 wildfire season. The meeting was led by Comisión Nacional Forestal (CONAFOR) head Engineer José Javier May Chan and attended by representatives from the State Fire Management Center.

Quintana Roo authorities reported 29 forest fires during the 2025 season.

During the Tuesday meeting, they presented the year’s overall assessment, highlighting a significant decrease in the number of fires recorded compared to previous years.

During the 2025 session, it was reported that 29 forest fires were fought affecting a total of 6,717.84 hectares. These figures reflect a significant reduction resulting from the coordinated work between firefighters and state, municipal and federal institutions.

Engineer José Javier May Chan, head of operational coordination at the State Fire Management Center, noted that this achievement is the result of a joint effort with the State Civil Protection Coordination, led by Guillermo Núñez Leal, and the specialized firefighting teams.

“We are proud of the work done by our firefighters and the inter-institutional coordination that allowed us to respond to each incident promptly,” he stated.

During the analysis of the results, it was highlighted that, in many cases, the cause of the fires is unknown. Therefore, one of the priorities for next year will be to strengthen post-fire investigation to improve prevention strategies.

The months with the highest number of incidents were April (eight fires) and May (14 fires), coinciding with the driest season. The last reported forest fire was on the island of Holbox in August.

The last reported fire of the 2025 forest fire season was on Isla Holbox in August.

The State Fire Management Center is made up of firefighters from the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), the State Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA), the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) and the State Coordination of Civil Protection (COEPROC), with the support of elements from the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR) and water trucks from CONAGUA, who maintained permanent coordination throughout the season.

Also presented was the 2026 action plan which includes strengthening preventive measures, improving coordination schemes between institutions, and strengthening community training to support volunteer brigade members.
