Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Officially, Playa del Carmen is the name of the municipality previous called Solidaridad. Mayor Estefanía Mercado celebrated the government approval of the name change earlier this week.
The name change was made official March 20 “following the publication of Decree 111 in the Official Gazette of the State of Quintana Roo, which changes the name of the state’s eighth municipality,” she said.
Mercado thanked members of the 18th Legislature of the State Congress and the 11 councils of Quintana Roo, who were part of this history and supported the sentiments of the people of Playa del Carmen at all times.
Mercado reiterated her gratitude to everyone for their combined efforts to restore this land’s name and grandeur. “Because Playa del Carmen isn’t just a destination, it’s a home, a community, and living history,” she said.

“On March 13, all parliamentary groups of the State Congress gave their support with a resounding 24 votes in favor and 0 against, in general and in particular, to the Opinion with Draft Decree that reforms Articles 127, 128 sections V, VIII and XI, 134 section I and 135 section I of the Political Constitution of the Free and Sovereign State of Quintana Roo, and section I of Article 8 and the first paragraph of Article 12 of the Law of the Municipalities of the State of Quintana Roo,” she explained.
“Subsequently, the 11 municipalities of Quintana Roo approved the ruling, which, following the recent session in Congress to ratify the count, is now official,” she said. Playa del Carmen is no longer only the name of the city, but now, the name of the municipality.
