Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — With 15 votes in favor, one against and one absent, the Solidaridad City Council approved the name change of the municipality. City Council will move forward with the request to change the name from Solidaridad to Playa del Carmen.

The vote to approve the name change took place Wednesday during the eighth extraordinary session held in the new municipal palace. City Council approved the agreement to submit to the XVIII Legislature of the State Congress the draft decree amending Articles 127, 128, 134 and 135 of the State Political Constitution and Articles 8 and 12 of the Law of Municipalities of Quintana Roo, referring to the name change of the municipality of Solidaridad to Playa del Carmen.
The full Council approved, with 15 votes in favor and one against, the constitutional reform project promoted by Mayor Estefanía Mercado to return Playa del Carmen its identity.
“The approved agreement, which will be submitted to the XVIII Legislature of the State Congress for study, analysis and, if applicable, approval, establishes that the change of name of the municipality to Playa del Carmen is a natural step in the evolution of this destination, allowing its administrative identity to be aligned with the reality that defines it,” the Mayor reported in a statement.
“Furthermore, from a tourism perspective, Playa del Carmen is a name that already has intrinsic value in the global market and has the power to position the municipality in a prominent place within the competitive panorama of global tourism.
“In this sense, incorporating it as the official name of the municipality would not only facilitate its promotion, but would also reinforce the perception of its own, authentic and distinct identity, in addition to the fact that it also has a profound cultural and social meaning.
“Playa del Carmen itself is a symbol of integration, where Mayan traditions, Caribbean influence and worldviews brought by international visitors and residents converge.

“In fact, having a clear and representative name would facilitate attracting investments, designing more effective marketing strategies and strengthening a sense of belonging among residents,” she added.
