Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Isla Mujeres Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat) says they are ready for the upcoming sargassum season. The federal maritime agency says the municipality currently has 200 people ready to clear beaches when the seaweed begins to arrive.

Dayana Pérez Medina, the head of Isla Mujeres Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre (Zofemat), says even though they are not expecting a large arrival on municipal beaches, they are ready all the same.
Approximately 200 workers and specialized machinery have been readied in anticipation of the upcoming sargassum season.
“We are ready for any contingency. We hope that nature will be kind to us, but if not, we are prepared with the personnel, tools and machinery acquired through the management of Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde.
“We are around 200 people divided between the island and continental areas. Fortunately, our geographical position is quite favorable to us so we expect a season without atypical landings,” Pérez Medina said.

Sargassum clearing projects will be carried out in coordination with the Fifth Naval Region whose support will allow for better management of sargassum located in the sea. According to Pérez Medina, sargassum vessels are already at the Navy docks ready to be deployed if necessary.
