Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Municipal authorities in Isla Mujeres have shut down an illegal material quarry on the mainland. The closure was announced Thursday and involved several plots of land located in the Continental Zone.

The shut down was made by the Department of Urban Development and Environment and Ecology of the municipal government. Officials reported closing a material quarry located on plots 703, 704 and 705 in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres that was operating illegally and without the corresponding permits.
During the operation, it was confirmed that the material extraction activity was generating a negative impact on the environment and affecting the rights-of-way established in the Urban Development Program (PDU) of Ciudad Mujeres.

The area was secured and the corresponding closure seals were placed at the time of the operation.
“These operations have been carried out constantly in coordination with state government agencies in order to guarantee compliance with environmental and urban regulations, as well as to protect ecosystems and the orderly development of the municipality,” Isla Mujeres City Hall reported.

“With these actions, the Municipal Government of Isla Mujeres reiterates its commitment to sustainability, respect for the environment and the enforcement of the law for the benefit of its citizens,” City Hall added.
