Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Meetings continue between the state and motorcycle unions regarding changes to riding regulations. On Friday, both sides sat down again in Cancun to work on an Vest Law agenda they can agree on.
Motorcycle unions around Quintana Roo first requested a meeting in July after the state announced major changes to motorcycle rider laws. One of the biggest changes that has been rejected is the mandatory wearing of a reflective vest stamped with the motorcycle’s license plate number.
The state says those vests will help reduce crime since 80 percent of criminals use motorcycles, however, motorcycle unions say the wearing of the vest is an infringement of their rights.
Numerous Amparos have been filed and won in favor of the motorcycle unions, however, those Amparos are no longer valid since the official laws have not yet been created since both side continue to meet.
In a brief statement Friday, the SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) reported on the latest meeting held. “Authorities and motorcyclists hold working tables for the regularization of the reforms to the Mobility Law.
“Representatives of motorcyclists met with state and municipal authorities at the C5 Security Complex to advance in the mutual agreements of the Mobility Law of the state.”
Both sides met at the C5 in Cancun to discuss a revision to the repudiated Vest Law. Rodrigo Alcázar Urrutia, who heads the Mobility Institute of the State of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) said he hopes agreements can finally be defined that will allow this law to “move forward” soon.
