Riviera Maya, Q.R. — More than two dozen criminal gang members known to generate violence have been arrested in Riviera Maya. The 26 men and women are known to police for belonging to opposing gangs that create violence in the area.

The two groups of gang members were taken into custody from the island of Cozumel and the mainland of Playa del Carmen. In the group, police reported locating six Most Wanted or priority targets wanted in the state.
In a report, authorities said of the 26 gang members, 14 were arrested on Cozumel and 12 in Playa del Carmen. They were all picked up on drug charges.
During the detainments, police “arrested six priority targets belonging to a criminal group that generates violence and are dedicated to the sale and distribution of narcotics in the Puerta Maya area of Cozumel,” they said.
“After their arrest on the island, the six were transferred and placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Central District Prosecutor’s Office based in the city of Playa del Carmen.” The others from the Cozumel arrest “were placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry agent on the island.”
The 12 arrested in Playa del Carmen were taken into custody “in an operation carried out on Fifth Avenue. Agents secured 12 people, all of them members of a criminal group dedicated to generating violence and to the sale and distribution of drugs.
“These people were found to have bags containing white solid fragments with characteristics similar to the drug known as crystal, as well as fragments of a solid crystalline substance similar to methamphetamine,” police said.

“The State Attorney General’s Office reports that the 14 arrested in Cozumel and the 12 from Solidaridad belong to an opposing criminal group.”
The Interinstitutional Group of officers who made the arrests are made up of personnel from the Investigative Police of the FGE of Quintana Roo, the Secretariat of Citizen Security, the Secretariat of the Navy and the Municipal Police of Cozumel and Solidaridad.
