Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Mobility Institute of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) says they intend to install speed governors in public transport vehicles that travel Riviera Maya roads.

Imoveqroo head Rafael Hernández Kotasek says the Institute intends to install speed governors on vehicles that serve the federal Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Chetumal highway routes in order to ensure drivers respect the speed limits.
He says the project has already been introduced to the local transportation unions who have expressed their willingness to contribute to actions that will help reduce accident rates.
“I have already started negotiations with the unions that operate in Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Chetumal because there will be sanctions that must be made in relation to accidents.

“We are already in talks with them to have speed governors as a mandatory part of all vans. There are vans that go from Playa del Carmen to Cancun that exceed 120 and 130 kilometers per hour where the legal speed limit ranges from 80 to 100.
“If you install a governor that goes to 80, we will no longer have such an active presence of inspectors,” he explained.

A speed governor or speed limiter is an installed device that limits the maximum speed of a vehicle. Hernández Kotasek says that the Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) is hoping the new program, once started, will reduce highway accidents and the number of deaths recorded each year on the section of federal Riviera Maya highway.
