Mexico’s SRE meets with People’s Republic of China

Mexico City, Mexico — On Tuesday, Foreign Minister (SRE) Alicia Bárcena Ibarra met with the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Hua Chunying.

Both sides met within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which this year celebrates its eleventh anniversary.

The head of the SRE welcomed the results of the strategic partnership between both countries and recalled the solidarity between Mexico and China. In particular, the support for the acquisition of goods for those affected by Hurricane Otis.

Prior to the meeting, the designated Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, María Teresa Mercado Pérez, and the Assistant Minister, Hua Chunying, co-chaired the bilateral Political Consultations Mechanism.

The officials highlighted the excellent political dialogue and the reactivation of face-to-face meetings and exchange of visits.

In particular, they highlighted the first meeting of Presidents Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Xi Jinping, within the framework of the meeting of leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC), in San Francisco in November.

They also highlighted the visit to China by Secretary Bárcena Ibarra last December, where she met with Vice President Han Zheng, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Secretary of Commerce, Wang Wentao.

At the bilateral level, they emphasized the evolution of trade exchanges and investment flows and recognized that the cooperation agenda is an area of opportunity. Likewise, they agreed to continue working together to identify potential niches of interest that benefit their population.

The officials also addressed the situation in Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Middle East, and talked about the work carried out within the framework of the G20 in which Mexico and China actively participate.

China is Mexico’s second trading partner worldwide and the main one in Asia-Pacific. From January to November 2023, bilateral trade amounted to $114,158.5 million dollars.
