Mexico City, Mexico — Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum said she requested a call with US president Donald Trump after recent comments. On Monday, both sides spoke about trade and security, however, Sheinbaum did not elaborate on the “recent comments” that prompted the call.
President Sheinbaum said Monday that she had a “very good telephone conversation” with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Both presidents discussed security with respect for the sovereignty of both countries, the reduction of drug trafficking, trade and investments.
“We discussed the joint work that has been done on security issues. There are very important results from this collaborative effort, for example, the flow of fentanyl from Mexico into the United States has been reduced by 50 percent.
“How is that measured? By the fentanyl seizures they make on the other side of the border. So, CBP, which is a United States agency, publishes how much fentanyl they have seized on the other side of the border, and this has been reduced by 50 percent in one year.
“And also, even fentanyl-related deaths in the United States have been reduced by about 43 percent.
“I talked a little about the work we have done on security in Mexico, the results of which are public, of the number of laboratories that have been seized, the number of people arrested linked to organized crime, how homicides have decreased by 40 percent, the work that has been carried out jointly, based on understanding, with respect for our sovereignties.

“And, in the end we said that ‘we are going to continue collaborating’,” Sheinbaum said Monday.
According to President Sheinbaum, the call was requested after recent statements made by Trump to make clear that there is collaboration and coordination within the framework of sovereignty and that they are working together.
Therefore, between January 22nd and 23rd, the working groups of the Mexico-United States Security Implementation Group (GIS) will meet in the United States.
“He kept insisting that ‘if we asked, they could help with other issues.’ We told him, ‘Well, so far we’re doing very well, it’s not necessary. Besides, there’s Mexico’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.’ And he understood. It was a very friendly conversation. And we agreed that this committee would continue working together,” she explained.
Sheinbaum says that security is a joint responsibility of both countries and that an understanding has been established based on four principles: Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, shared and differentiated responsibility, mutual respect and trust and cooperation without subordination.
“The people of Mexico need to know that first, their President will never negotiate sovereignty or territorial integrity, never. Second, that we seek coordination, without subordination, as equals and third, that this is permanent.”
She mentioned that during the call they discussed the situation in Venezuela, and that Mexico’s position is established in its Political Constitution.
President Sheinbaum said that the Monday conversation lasted approximately 15 minutes and that President Trump acknowledged the security measures being taken in Mexico.
They also concluded that they would have another conversation to discuss trade issues, as well as the situation of Mexicans living in the United States.
