Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The Navy of Mexico carried out a medical evacuation of an Icon of the Seas cruise ship passenger. On Monday afternoon, Mexico’s navy medical team was requested by the captain of the cruise ship for a sick passenger.
The Secretariat of the Navy reports that personnel belonging to the Ninth Naval Region based in Isla Mujeres carried out the medical evacuation of a foreign tourist off the coast of Isla Mujeres.
The medical evacuation was carried out after receiving an emergency call in the Command and Control Room of the Ninth Naval Region requesting the medical evacuation of a male passenger who was suffering from septic shock.
The immediate departure of a Defender-type vessel from the Naval Station for Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance (ENSAR) Isla Mujeres was ordered with specialized rescue and Naval Health personnel on board.
Upon arriving at the point of emergency, approximately five nautical miles (nine kilometers) east of Isla Mujeres, personnel carried out the examination and medical evacuation of the man who was transferred to Puerto Juárez, where he was handed over to a private ambulance to transport him to a local hospital in order to receive specialized medical attention.
