Mexico to become regional port powerhouse with a multi-billion peso injections

Mexico City, Mexico — With public investments of 55.1 billion pesos and a private investment of 241 billion, Mexico will become a regional port powerhouse. The country will be a competitive, efficient National Port System that meets Mexico’s needs.

The Government of Mexico, through the Ministry of the Navy, reported that a public investment of 55.1 billion pesos and a private investment in excess of 241 billion pesos, will be allocated to carry out priority projects in nine ports.

With this, by the end of the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico will have a competitive, efficient National Port System in line with the needs of the country, she reported.

President Claudia Sheinbaum made the announcement Wednesday, emphasizing that public and private investments are of great importance as these are strategic projects that create jobs and will make Mexico a regional port powerhouse.

She reported that broken down, the public money will include 5.6 billion pesos in the port of Ensenada, 20.5 billion pesos in Manzanillo, 7.4 billion pesos in Lázaro Cárdenas, 670 million pesos in Acapulco, 10.2 billion pesos in Veracruz and 10.7 billion pesos in Progreso.

The private investment will include 241.5 billion pesos of which 3.7 billion pesos will be spent in Ensenada, 92.1 billion in Manzanillo, 5.7 billion in Lázaro Cárdenas, 680 million pesos in Acapulco, 10.4 billion pesos in Veracruz, 1.8 billion pesos in Progreso, 40.6 billion pesos in Guaymas, 84.8 billion pesos in Topolobampo and 802 million pesos in Altamira.

“These are very important investments that generate employment, but they are also strategic development projects for the country. Ports are either cabotage, meaning transportation from one Mexican port to another, or export, import, or tourism development.

“Mexico is a country par excellence that has its gateway, its coastline, to the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. So, this development that is being undertaken is very, very important,” she said Wednesday.

Navy Secretary Admiral Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles explained that under the President’s instructions, six priority ports will be modernized with public and private resources.

They are the Port of Ensenada, Baja California, Port of Manzanillo, Colima, Port of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, Port of Acapulco, Guerrero, Port of Veracruz and the Port of Progreso in Yucatán.

He specified that in the case of the projects to be carried out in El Sauzal, on San Miguel Beach within the Port of Ensenada, a public consultation will be held so the project is carried out by consensus.

In addition, three more ports will also be intervened with private investment including the Port of Guaymas in Sonora, the Port of Topolobampo in Sinaloa and the Port of Altamira in Tamaulipas.

Last week local Quintana Roo authorities announced the completion of a preliminary study for the construction of a 130-hectare industrial deep sea port in Puerto Morelos.
