Mexico sends humanitarian aide and specialized search personnel to Venezuelan earthquake zone

Cancun, Q.R. — More than a dozen personnel from a search and rescue team have arrived in the earthquake zone of Venezuela. The specialized team, along with a dog, were sent to assist in search efforts following the recent earthquakes.

The Cancun International Rescue Brigade (BRIC) left Cancun Friday night for Venezuela to join the rescue efforts following the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes.

The Quintana Roo contingent consists of 15 specially trained rescuer members and a certified search and rescue dog. The group boarded a special humanitarian aid plane Friday night to travel to the disaster zone.

Specialized search and rescue personnel were sent from Cancun June 26, 2026.

The group are expected to help in search efforts for one week, arriving with high-tech tools and subsistence supplies.

According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, 920 were known dead and more than 51,000 missing due to the Wednesday earthquakes.

People in the affected region require temporary shelters, health care, drinking water and sanitation.

On Thursday, the Government of Mexico sent humanitarian aid to the people of Venezuela following instructions of President Claudia Sheinbaum. Two strategic transport planes of the Mexican Air Force departed for Venezuela, carrying humanitarian aid in response to the earthquakes that occurred on June 24, 2026.

The aid consisted of a contingent of 261 personnel, including 240 from the Army, 11 from the Air Force, and 10 from the National Guard. This contingent comprises doctors, paramedics, and nurses, as well as search and rescue specialists for the immediate assistance of those affected.

It also included 18 canine units specializing in locating people trapped in collapsed structures. Approximately 4.4 tons of tools, materials, and equipment and 2.7 tons of medical supplies. The contingent departed from the Santa Lucía Air Base in the State of Mexico.

In addition, a C-130 Hercules heavy transport plane from the Mexican Air Force also departed carrying 8 tons of medicine and 4 tons of equipment and materials for rescue and salvage activities.

At the request of President Sheinbaum, once the Mexican delegation is in Venezuelan territory and has had initial contact with authorities, an assessment will be made as to whether it is necessary to reinforce the contingent to strengthen the relief efforts for the vulnerable population.
