Mexico City government reports 70 injured, 3 dead in massive LP tanker explosion

Mexico City, Mexico — The head of the Mexico City Government reported 70 people injured and three killed in an LP gas tanker explosion. The explosion happened at the Puente de La Concordia in Mexico City Wednesday afternoon.

The explosion occurred at 2:20 p.m. on the Puente de La Concordia Bridge after a tanker truck carrying 49,500 liters of LP gas overturned. Flames from the explosion reached the overpass above where the tanker rolled while taking a corner at excessive speed.

Clara Brugada Molina, the Head of Government of Mexico City, reported 70 registered victims who were immediately transferred to different hospitals in the capital and the State of Mexico for treatment.

In total, 51 men and 16 women were injured, two of them unknown. In addition, two adults and a baby died while receiving medical care. A total of 28 vehicles were damaged in the massive explosion.

In a press conference held at the scene of the accident, she announced the publication of a preliminary list of the names of those affected with the aim of providing certainty to the families.

“It’s a list that needs to be verified, but we feel it’s very important to share the information we have because we know the family members are concerned,” she said.

The Secretary of Citizen Security for Mexico City, Pablo Vázquez Camacho, reported  that the driver of the LP gas unit, belonging to the Silza Transport company of the Tomza Group, was identified and is still alive, although in serious condition.

Authorities said that forensic investigations are continuing to work to determine the official cause of the accident.
