Mexico City, Mexico — Mexico has appealed to the International Court of Justice to hold Ecuador accountable for the wrong committed against the country last month.
The Secretary of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, said she, along with legal council, participated in the appeal on instructions from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Bárcena Ibarra said the Foreign Ministry participated before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the hearings on the request for provisional measures in the case of the Embassy of Mexico in Quito (Mexico vs. Ecuador).
The Mexican delegation, headed by legal consultant Alejandro Celorio Alcántara, was made up entirely of public servants. Among them are people from the Mexican Foreign Service with extensive experience in international litigation, including those filed against commercial negligence that facilitates illicit arms trafficking to Mexico.
The International Court of Justice is expected to conduct its deliberations to decide, in the coming weeks, whether to impose provisional measures forcing Ecuador to take the necessary measures to protect the Mexican Embassy, its properties and its archives.
Mexico expresses its full confidence in international law and justice. For this reason, the ICJ was resorted to in a timely manner so that, with the force of law, Ecuador responds to the grievance committed against our country.
