Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — CORRECTED: This article has been corrected to reflect that German ship Thor Heyerdahl was the rescue ship that contacted Mexican officials regarding 10 found at sea.
Personnel from the Fifth Naval Region intercepted a ship off the coast of Isla Mujeres from where they secured 10 people. Ship Thor Heyerdahl was met after reporting a crew rescue from a small vessel approximately 36 nautical miles (67 kilometers) northeast of Isla Mujeres Thursday morning.

Mexican officials were also alerted to the passing of the smaller boat by a container ship who reported the vessel in likely trouble. Crew of the container ship CMA CGM Mercantour notified the Fifth Naval Region to report the sighting of a small boat with 10 people on board.
Mexican officials were also alerted by the crew on German ship Thor Heyerdahl regarding 10 found at sea. Those 10 were brought aboard their vessel.
Marine personnel on a Navy interceptor patrol located the ship approximately six nautical miles (11 kilometers) north of Isla Mujeres. All 10 rescued were loaded onto the Navy patrol vessel and transferred to the Puerto Juárez mainland Naval Station.

The group of 10 were handed over to authorities of the National Institute of Migration (INM) to carry out the corresponding legal procedures. Authorities have not said where their small boat was from or confirmed the nationality of the crew.
CORRECTION: A reader from Germany has provided details surrounding the ship and rescue of 10 crew members. According to Guido Fochtler, ship Thor Heyerdahl also saw the 10 people on a different (small) boat experiencing problems.
Crew from Thor Heyerdahl rescued the 10 in distress from their boat, bringing them on board Thor Heyerdahl and notifying Mexican authorities. The Navy of Mexico met ship Thor Heyerdahl at sea from where the 10 rescued crew were transferred to Mexican land and handed over to INM.
German Ship Thor Heyerdahl is part of an organization “Classroom Under Sails”. The ship is on a voyage from October 2024 until April 2025 with 33 pupils on board.
