Mexican Marina transfer two American cruise ship passengers to mainland for Cancun hospital transfer

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Two American cruise passengers traveling aboard ship Harmony of the Seas were transferred to Cancun hospital. Mexico’s specialized Marina personnel transferred the two patients by boat to waiting ambulances on the mainland Tuesday.

The cruise ship was met by the Marina medical staff upon the medical evacuation requests from the ship. The Secretary of the Marina reported meeting Harmony of the Seas approximately five nautical miles (nine kilometers) off the coast of Isla Mujeres.

In a statement, authorities said “the Mexican Navy, acting as Coast Guard, reports that personnel belonging to the Fifth Naval Region based in Isla Mujeres performed the medical evacuation of two foreign tourists off the coast of Isla Mujeres.

“This action was carried out after receiving a call for help requesting the medical evacuation of a woman who had acute abdominal anemia and a man with a cerebrovascular event, of American nationality, aged 54 and 75 respectively, who were traveling aboard the cruise ship Harmony of the Seas.

“A Defender-type vessel and an MLB-type vessel from the Naval Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Station (ENSAR) Isla Mujeres were ordered to set sail with specialized rescue and naval health personnel on board.

“Upon arriving at the emergency site, approximately five nautical miles (nine kilometers) northeast of Isla Mujeres, they examined and medically evacuated both people.

“They were subsequently transferred to Puerto Juárez where they were received by two private ambulances to transport them to a local hospital,” the Navy said in a statement.
