Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Puerto Morelos Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz says support is being offered to residents whose homes flooded during the recent rain. The Mayor, along with other City Hall members, toured affected areas Tuesday and Wednesday.
Tours were also being made to verify flodded streets due to clogged drains. Merari and other municipal members righted fallen garbage cans and ordered the cleaning of streets to remove improperly discarded garbage, which is the most common reason drains fail.
Merari also ordered the desilting of absorption wells and the removal of construction material located on sidewalks and streets since material such as sand clogs the sewers, among other drains.
In a statement, Merari said Almendros Street, between Pich and Maculix was drained with the support of a pump, as well as the homes located between the back of the Secretariat of Citizen Security and the Directorate of Public Services.
She reported those areas were flooded from highway runoff. “The water that runs off the federal highway accumulates and, when it saturates the storm drain, invades the houses,” she reported.
The General Director of Public Services, Leonel Salazar Trejo explained “the wells work well, but there comes a time when they become saturated, particularly during storms like we’ve had these days, and that is when the water begins to invade the houses.
“The solution would be to drill wells in the part where the rain runs in order to prevent it from reaching Almendros Street,” he said.
Merari says an absorption well will be drilled and there are plans to improve Chechen Street.
