Mayor says lagoon road extension would provide tourist access to more Bacalar hotels

Bacalar, Q.R. — The Bacalar City Council is working on a project to extend the coastal road of the lagoon. The preliminary project consists of extending the Laguna de los Siete Colores waterfront toward the Aarón Merino Fernández Ejido to attract more visitors and investors.

Bacalar Mayor José Alfredo Contreras Méndez says it is a stretch of around six or seven kilometers to the north that they are looking to expand. He said an expansion would improve tourist infrastructure by facilitating access to the hotels in that area.

“We are working on a preliminary project to present to the federal government to see if we can obtain the necessary funding to improve the Bacalar waterfront, specifically the extension of the coastal road.

“We are talking about adding another six or seven kilometers past the Mia Hotel. At the moment, we don’t have an exact figure for the investment because we are still working on it, but it is a proposal that will help us attract more investment by making it easier for tourists to reach the hotels in that area that offer top-notch services.”

He said that once the project is ready, it will be presented to the federation in order to obtain the resources for its construction.

“It is a fairly considerable resource that is required and we are going to see if through the federation we can bring that project to fruition. We are working on the preliminary project to present it to the federation and with it, be able to dignify the Bacalar coastline,” he explained.

Contreras Méndez stated that the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) had previously conducted topographic studies of the area, but these studies were not continued.

Therefore, this work will be used as a basis to complete the expansion of the coastal road of the Lagoon of Seven Colors toward the Aarón Merino Fernández Ejido. He mentioned that they are also waiting on approval from the ejidos to begin clearing the land.

An extension would provide access to more waterfront hotels.

“First we must have the authorization of the ejido members to open the road access and then be able to begin with the clearing and preparation of the land and that is what we are working on,” he said.

While he did not provide cost figures for the current proposal, last year he mentioned that they estimated the budget would be above 200 million pesos.
