Mayor lays first stone for new 30 million peso Cancun animal hospital

Cancun, Q.R. — The city of Cancun has laid the first stone for its new fully equipped animal hospital. Mayor Ana Paty Peralta says more than 30 million is being spent on the new facility.

She says the new building will offer a modern, spacious and dignified site for pets and their owners with fully equipped veterinary clinics, an operating room area, hospitalization and sterilization facilities, a space for responsible adoption, among other areas.

“This project came from you, from the Participatory Budget, from listening to the rescuers, the foundations and the neighbors, who gave us something very clear: Cancun needs a dignified space to care for its animals, and here we are responding,” said Mayor Peralta.

At the site located in Superblock 99, Peralta explained that the initiative began with a budget of five million pesos and now, more than 30 million pesos will be invested in its first phase to renovate what used to be the municipal slaughterhouse into a new, modern, spacious and dignified hospital.

Mayor Ana Paty Peralta is seen here speaking at the Thursday event. January 15, 2026.

“With fully equipped veterinary clinics, an operating room area, a hospitalization and sterilization area, an exclusive space for responsible adoption, but most importantly, we are going to care for animals in the street, that is our priority,” she said.

The Mayor called on citizens to be more responsible when acquiring a dog or cat as a pet, and therefore presented the proposal to create the Municipal Institute for Animal Protection and Welfare, as part of a comprehensive public policy on the subject and with a long-term vision.

“With absolute certainty in our government, and I know in the State Government as well, we completely reject animal abuse, cruelty and illegal sales. We will continue with this commitment and work to guarantee dignified, transparent, and humane treatment, befitting the affection that the people of Cancun have for animals,” she said.

On behalf of Governor Mara Lezama, the Secretary of Environment and Ecology, Oscar Rébora Aguilera, highlighted the work and commitment of the mayor in consolidating the project with the previous work such as paving the land and getting the state and federal permits in order.

The new animal hospital will be approximately 950 square meters January 15, 2026.

Samantha Hernández Cardeña, the Secretary of Public Works and Services, explained that the new facility will offer a reception area, consulting rooms, laboratories, X-rays, clinical analysis, operating rooms and all the specifications required by a veterinary hospital.

The new animal hospital will be 954 square meters of building with four consulting rooms, two operating rooms and more than 150 shelters. It is expected to be complete in approximately 10 months.
