Mayor-elect Estefania Mercado has bypass road project planned for Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Days ahead of officially becoming the new Mayor of Playa del Carmen, mayor-elect Estefanía Mercado has announced 15 large-scale projects.

In a press conference Tuesday, the soon-to-be new head of Solidaridad said the projects she has in mind will improve the urban image of Solidaridad and rescue public spaces. She says the projects are part of a broad catalog in which 900 million pesos will be invested during her first year of government.

One of those projects, she announced, will be a bypass around Playa del Carmen. She says efforts are being made in coordination with the state and federal governments to build a bypass that will serve to relieve urban traffic in the city.

“The Governor already has the proposal for this project,” she reported during the Tuesday conference.

Mercado also met with members of the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) Riviera Maya, as well as with the Colleges of Engineers and Architects, led by Martha Suárez and Fidel Pérez Castillo, respectively.

At the meeting with businessmen affiliated with Coparmex, Estefanía Mercado introduced Estefanía Hernández as coordinator of the Tourism Roundtable, whom she charged with working hand-in-hand with Coparmex and tourism entrepreneurs on a promotional project for the next International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid, Spain.

She announced that during her administration there will be a one-stop shop to streamline and make transparent the procedures of Coparmex in the City Hall, while calling on businessmen to work together “to make this city shine and be the world power that we boast about to the world but is not consistent with reality.”

Estefanía Mercado also called on the business community to participate in decision-making regarding security in order to jointly implement a comprehensive security strategy with mobility and investment.

“The number one concern is extortion and insecurity, so we are going to reinforce intelligence work with the participation of everyone,” she said.

Mercado met with the Colleges of Engineers and Architects where she made a presentation of the portfolio of the 15 projects she intends to start during her first 100 days in office.

“We are going to start with 15 large-scale strategic projects. In the first 100 days we are going to launch all these projects. Today, we are presenting prototypes of what we want to achieve. The difference will be made in the citizen participation of all the projects that we are going to present to change the face of Solidaridad in these next three years,” Mercado reported.

The mayor0-elect said that these first 15 projects “are only the first take” of a broad portfolio in which the first 900 million pesos will be invested in her first 12 months in office.

“We are considering parks and renovations. We have a very important project for our brothers and sisters in Puerto Aventuras. In Villas del Sol we have committed to begin remodeling parks in the first 100 days.

“Everything will be gradual over the next three years, but we are committed to investing 900 million pesos in the first year, of which 100 million pesos will go to sports,” she said.
