Mayor confirms Expomaya land belongs to government

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — The mayor of Felipe Carrillo Puerto says the land where a new military base has been started belongs to the federal government. Mayor María Candelaria Hernández Solís confirmed that the Expomaya land does not belong to the Ejidos as they claim.

She says their roadblocks and their demand for compensation in the form of a 40 million pesos payment has only create a setback for the development of the barracks, which was to house 200 military personnel.

Hernández said that since the dispute is in the legal system, only a judge can resolve the ongoing conflict.

In early November, a group of Ejidos protested the construction of a military base on land called Expomaya, claiming they owned it. However, Sedena (Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional) said they owned the land and set up a security perimeter around the land.

In protest of that, a group of Ejidos blocked the federal highway and demanded a 40 million pesos payment. On Thursday, Hernández said the ejido are asking for 40 million pesos for the payment of a land that belongs to the Sedena and added that “talks continue with various proposals, including creating a municipal market on ejido lands, but they have not accepted it.”

Hernández confirmed the land is owned by the federal government and Sedena, “therefore the compensation requested by the ejido cannot be paid. In the meantime, negotiations continue with proposals that the ejidos have not wanted to accept.”

She said the situation continues to create a setback for development of the much needed base which will be used to house military personnel to increase security in the area.
