Marina reports nearly 1,260 tons of sargassum cleared from Costa Maya beaches in one week

Costa Maya, Q.R. — The Secretariat of the Navy says nearly 1,260 tons of sargassum has been collected in seven days. The massive haul of seaweed was removed from the beach areas of Costa Maya.

The Secretaría de Marina says naval personnel continue with the implementation of the 2025 Sargassum Response Strategy, with the goal of mitigating the negative effects of this seaweed on the environment, tourism, and society along the coast of the state of Quintana Roo.

“In this context, from July 26 to August 1, 259.9 tons of sargassum were collected from the beaches of Mahahual and Xcalak,” they reported.

The work was carried out by 78 members of the Eleventh Naval Zone and 80 civilian personnel, including business owners, restaurateurs and service providers from the Port of Mahahual. In addition, specialized machinery and various resources were deployed for this purpose. The Secretaria says 2,265 meters of containment barriers remain in place off the coast of Mahahual.

They say the Sargassum Response Strategy is ongoing with collection plans based on ocean conditions and grounding volumes.
