Costa Maya, Q.R. — Despite lessened sargassum along the northern coastal areas, masses of seaweed continue to flood southern beaches. According to the Secretaria de Marina, in the last week of August, 237 tons of sargassum was collected between Mahahual and Xcalak.

The seaweed was removed from the coast by 70 Marina personnel. The Secretaria de Marina reported using specialized machinery for collecting sargassum in the Mahahual area where they have installed 2,265 meters of containment barriers.
“This 2025 Sargassum Response Strategy is possible thanks to the coordination between the Mexican Navy Secretariat and state and municipal governments, as well as the active participation of organized civil society and the private sector,” the agency stated.
In the north, Antonio de la Torre Chambé, the Director of Cancun Public Services, said that in the last week they have noticed a significant decrease in arriving sargassum amounts.

While the amount being currently collected in the north is lessened, it is still a lot more, by as much as four times, than what was collected last year, he said.
