Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The state’s new motorcycle law dubbed the Vest Law, will likely remain on hold until next year due to manufacturing issues. The State Secretary says without the necessary technology to manufacture the vests, the implementation of the law is on hold.

The new law requires motorcycle drivers and passengers to wear numbered vests and helmets that match their license plate. Torres said their call for company proposals to produce the vests was deemed void since none of the interested companies had the necessary technology to enable the vests to be recognized by security cameras.
State Secretary Cristina Torres Gómez says the enforcement of the law has been postponed until sometime next year while they work out vest production problems. She said the bidding for the manufacture of the vests will be re-launched next year.
In the meantime, authorities will not be able to enforce the law even though it exists after being published in the state’s official gazette in July of 2024. Torres said once the state is able to produce the vests, they will be distributed free of charge to motorcyclists.
