Makeshift electrical connection investigated as cause of Cancun house fire

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun family lost their modest home to a fire Monday in the midst of a very cold week. The makeshift house made of wood and sheet metal was completely destroyed by the fire.

Cancun firemen responded to reports of the house fire in SM 237 Monday afternoon. At the scene, they arrived to a home they said was already “engulfed in flames”.

Due to the size of the fire and strong winds, emergency personnel proceeded to evacuate neighbors. The large fire took some time to completely extinguish and required additional precautions including the removal of the home’s gas tanks.

Cancun firemen reported no injuries during the fire. An official cause has not yet be named, however, firemen hinted at the possibility of an electrical issue through a makeshift connection.

Firemen were not able to save the house in the Monday afternoon fire February 2, 2026.

“Members of the Cancun Fire Department responded to a house fire in Superblock 237, where a one-story home, constructed with lightweight materials such as wood and sheet metal, was engulfed in flames,” Bomberos Cancun reported.

“Upon arrival, personnel searched for potential victims, conducted a precautionary evacuation of nearby residents and eliminated additional hazards, including gas tanks and the electrical supply.

“Efforts continued with debris removal and thorough cooling of the area to prevent reignition. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

“Check your electrical installations, avoid makeshift connections and keep your gas tanks in good working order.”
