Othón P. Banco, Q.R. — The main suspect in the kidnapping and murder of a Quintana Roo man from his place of work has been charged. Police said Thursday that Abel “N” was tracked down and served with his arrest warrant in prison in the state of Tabasco.
After serving his time, he was returned to Quintana Roo where he has been charged with aggravated kidnapping in the 2023 death of a local man.
Abel “N” is being investigated for the August 6, 2023 kidnapping of the victim, who has not been named.
According to police, the victim left his home August 5 in the town of San Pedro Peralta to drive to his place of work along the federal highway outside Chetumal.
On the afternoon of August 6, he went missing from his place of employment after stepping out for a few minutes. Coworkers never saw him again.
However, around midnight on that same day, the victim’s mother received a videoed message of her son blindfolded and a ransom demand of 400,000 pesos for his release.
“The calls continued on August 7 and 8, but the whereabouts of the missing man remained unknown,” police reported.
“According to the evidence, the suspect allegedly deprived the victim of his freedom and subsequently manipulated his cell phone during the days of the negotiation in order to reach an agreement for his release.”
Police said after ongoing investigations, they were able to identifiy the likely suspect, who was found imprisoned in the state of Tabasco.
Authorities did not provide information as to why he was serving time in Tabasco.
“As a result of technological, field and office investigations, it was possible to locate the accused in the prison of Villahermosa, Tabasco, where in collaboration with the FGE of both states, he was served with the arrest warrant.”
In their statement, police said the victim’s remains were located in the state of Chiapas several months after his disappearance.
