Mahahual, Q.R. — Residents living in irregular settlements around the town of Mahahual are threatening another road block. The group are angry after the government cancelled their agreed upon July 30 meeting.

On July 23, the group blocked a section of highway south of Mahahual in response to attempted land evictions they said were illegal. They were asking to speak with a government official regarding future land evictions, among other concerns.
By end of day, State Undersecretary Nabil Eljure Terrazas arrived to talk with the group. Mahahual Mayor Fernando Hernández Peña met with Eljure Terrazas upon his arrival and a meeting was set up for July 30.
However on July 29, Hernández Peña posted a cancellation of the agreed up meeting saying “Dear citizens of Mahahual, we apologize and inform you that, due to matters beyond our control, the meeting scheduled for Wednesday, July 30th, with representatives from the Ministry of Government and AGEPROO, has been canceled. Thank you for your understanding!”
Residents that were to be represented in the meeting are now threatening a second road block since the meeting was not rescheduled.

The group says “a more severe roadblock” could be set up at the entrance to Costa Maya in response to the cancellation. The group of residents affected by the evictions are living on land currently involved in legal disputes.
