LP gas explosion rocks entire Cancun neighborhood sending debris and dust into the sky

Cancun, Q.R. — A large LP gas explosion has left three homes damaged and four people with injuries. Cancun firemen were called to an address in SM 51 Saturday with reports of the explosion.

The explosion was reported around 6:00 a.m. by neighbors. Area residents blocks away from the explosion site also reported hearing it. The blast was strong enough to take out the entire bottom floor of a building, comprising the whole structure.

Three units were heavily damaged by the blast. According to early information, an accumulation of LP gas on the first floor is believed responsible for the massive eruption.

The explosion also caused significant damage to at least two other units.

Area residents called emergency services after hearing the explosion then seeing a column of dust and debris flying upward into the air. The residential street was left littered with concrete bricks, metal and shattered glass from the explosion.

Emergency rescuers cordoned off the area while assisting four people including Gilberto V., 70, and Grecia L., 57, the homeowners, who suffered only minor injuries.

Two others were reported injured by debris from the gas blast. One man who was passing by at the time of the explosion has his vehicle hit by debris.

A car was damaged and the driver injured as he drove through the area at the time of the explosion.

He was treated at the scene for minor injuries. His vehicle suffered at least one shattered window. The fourth injured is reported to be a young man who also lives in the area.

The strong blast blew kitchen cupboards from the walls of a second unit, while a third unit suffered cracked walls and broken windows.

According to Civil Protection officials, the explosion was caused by an LP gas leak on the first floor in the kitchen’s gas line. Civil Protection ultimately determined that the main house was uninhabitable.
