Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — The rehabilitation of the fishing pier, marked by damage from Hurricane Zeta in October 2020, has begun in central Puerto Morelos. Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz said the project, one of her first commitments to the fishing and tourism sector, seeks to restore a crucial infrastructure for the community.
Tziu Muñoz highlighted the bureaucratic challenges faced due to the fact that the dock is located in a federal jurisdiction zone. However, after managing the permit with the state and federal government, the “Destination Agreement in favor of Puerto Morelos” was obtained, which allowed the work to move forward.
The more than 6.7 million pesos in funding for the rehabilitation project comes from the Trust for Administration and Payment of Environmental Sanitation Rights. That fund was created with hotels and civil society to ensure transparency in the use of funds.
The rehabilitation will include the demolition of 35 linear meters of the current structure and the installation of new wooden piles. It will also include the extension of the dock to 113.8 linear meters and a surface area of 477.96 m².

The work is expected to be completed before the end of the year, providing a functional and attractive dock for both local users and visitors.
Axel Rosado Ramírez, the Municipal Secretary of Public Works and Services, stressed the importance of the project as a symbol of identity for Puerto Morelos and its fundamental role for fishermen and nautical service providers.
