Riviera Maya, Q.R. — State traffic officials say they are working on a regulations review to include motorized units that are not classified as cars or motorcycles. Efraín García Chávez, the Director of State Transit says vehicles such as motorized bicycles and electric scooters are increasing on city streets.
He says many of these bikes have the ability to travel up to 40 kilometers per hour. García Chávez says with that, it is important the state update its traffic regulations to include these new forms of transportation.
Regulations such as the wearing of helmets, licensing and respecting traffic laws would be applied.
He says these motorized means of transportation should have license plates and that drivers have licenses or permits to travel on city streets, the same regulations that currently apply to other motorized vehicles.
“There is no doubt that this should be a joint effort with the Mobility Institute to regulate the traffic of these electric units, which, although they do not have a combustion engine, are electric and can reach speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour,” he said.
“Whenever they travel on roads, they must comply with the instructions equivalent to a motor vehicle which is why the municipal traffic regulations must be adapted to regulate them. What we want is the prevention of accidents,” he explained.
García Chávez says he understands they are considered an economic alternative to get around the city and have become increasingly common.
“We have to see to it that they have their corresponding license and their plates, even though they are electric vehicles, let us remember that technology is going in that direction,” he said.
