Letters to the Editor: Regulation free electric transportation

Greetings,

Attn: Raul Tassinari Gonzalez
Secretaria de Seguridad Ciudadana

I would like to express my sentiment towards the currently “regulation free” electric skateboard method of transportation that has increased significantly over the past two or three years here in Playa.

Seeing individuals fly down busy streets like 30th Avenue or Calle 38 Norte on electric skateboards without helmets or vests is now common. Those devices travel very fast in a straight line and create a hazard because when glancing in your mirrors you are not always able to see them coming down the line between cars or from the opposite direction.

Most of these devices do not have illuminating front or rear lights, so without wearing vests the riders are nearly invisible. They should not be allowed on city streets after dusk.

As a licensed and insured motorist, I believe that any vehicle that can achieve speed equal to a car on a city street should also be licensed and insured. This includes e-bicycles, skateboards with and without seats and steering mechanisms.

I fear the increased usage of these unlicensed, unregulated devices. Drivers today already face safety challenges with licensed moto’s both personal and for food delivery zipping in and out of traffic, on top of manual bicycles and tricycles, that already “share” the challenged roads.

I hope that your organization can effectively put controls on these devices and require at a bare minimum of safety helmets and vests, and they should only be for one person, not two or more. And yes – SLOW DOWN!

Thank you for taking up this issue,

Sincerely,

Frank Gonzales
