Letters to the Editor: Power generator makes Isla Mujeres ‘intolerable to be here’

I have had the privilege and pleasure of owning a home on Isla Mujeres for close to 20 years. I love Isla Mujeres and love Mexico, the Mexican people, as well as Mexico’s long and rich culture. It is, or has been, for 15 of these 20 years, my second home.

You recently published an article about the latest power generator failure on the island. Unfortunately since the “back-up” power generator was installed—without any notification—5 years ago on the airport strip—I love Isla Mujeres a lot less. Between the noise being like a 747 on full throttle take off, not to mention the toxic fumes, it is intolerable to be here.

I own a business in America (and I will still call the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico!) and used to rent my house when I wasn’t here. Often. Since the installation of the generator I no longer can do that. For 3 years I did not come to my home here at all and no longer recommend anyone visit Isla Mujeres no matter where they stay.

I am but one lucky American and treat everyone with respect and when in Mexico I always contribute generously to the local community. It’s my pleasure doing so, become friends with countless people here, and treat those people who look after my house like family.

The generator is dangerous (not to mention an eye-sore). Last Thursday after running for several hours something blew up and those living on the airport strip are fortunate that the fireball (there were two actually), which I heard went into the sea, did not set one or more of their houses on fire.

It’s dangerous and should never have been installed where it is in the first place. (I also suffer from tinnitus and even after a few minutes of the generator being on, it’s much much worse with a headache to follow days after).

I am quite sympathetic to the needs of ALL residents of Isla Mujeres in need of power but the location of this generator and the manner in which it is used is inexcusable.

I know for a fact that several residents (not me) have written the President of Isla Mujeres as well as CFE on numerous occasions and have usually received no replies whatsoever.

If the generator is not moved, I soon will. To another city or country who values those who choose to live there. The government of Isla Mujeres clearly does not.

Sincerely,
A Very Concerned Isla Mujeres Resident
