Letters to the Editor: Invisible in Isla

This is the second letter I am submitting regarding the health hazard that I along with my neighbors have encountered on Isla Mujeres for over 6 years.

It is concerning a diesel powered mega generator that was installed in March of 2019 in an existing neighborhood known as the “airport” strip in Isla Mujeres.

Since I along with many of my neighbors have expressed through their own letters how damaging this installation was and continues to be not only to daily living here but also health conditions that have been exasperated by illegal noise levels and toxic diesel fumes being omitted into the air we breath.

I think I am at a loss as to why our lives just don’t matter to anyone that could do something about it – from a local level to the state level and even federal agencies that in the past have ignored our pleas and concerns.  We have all either spoke with or submitted letters to almost every agency available over the years and we get nothing in response.

In fact about 2 years or so ago every piece of emails, documentation of the operation of the generator over the years was downloaded, copied and submitted to the Municipal here on Isla Mujeres with the promise that it would be submitted to the mayor.  Nothing was ever received in response to this.  Of course, none of us were surprised because our lives and health just don’t matter.

How would anyone feel if they were just being ignored for 6 years? How would any of you feel if your lives were upended by improper planning and consideration of installing this monstrosity.

We are not selfish people – quite the opposite and do not want anyone on Isla to not have the necessary power needed to live their lives in comfort and security. But this could have and still is able to be accomplished in so many ways that would not be adversely affecting our lives.

For example – it could have been installed north of the old tower at the airport – where no houses are surrounding it.  A more modern one could have been installed also in the area just mentioned. But no – CFE and whomever just didn’t care where it was being installed and to date no one cares about our lives.

It was also suggested to officials that sound proofing could be installed around the existing generator – while not a perfect solution it is one that would significantly deflect the illegal levels of noise that the generator “generates”.  This too has fallen on deaf ears.

We all contribute to Isla in different ways – but the bottom line is we are taxpayers and deserve answers and consideration.  Most of use have chosen Isla Mujeres as our home – we worked all our lives and were lucky to be able to save funds so as to be able to purchase a piece of paradise which we all thought Isla was. Unfortunately we just don’t matter to anyone – it is a feeling of hopelessness and despair.

I am attaching pictures of what this looks like from the airport side – can you imagine living with this thing along with all the tankards that on their own present such a disaster waiting to happen.  It just is a matter of time.

Respectfully
