I just read your article on the mayor of Tulum adding a “free” access point to the beach at Mirador Templo. Great! Or is it? It is not free in any means if you are a tourist. Since the opening of the Jaguar Park, there has been a multitude of fee change to enter that side (North Side for lack of better name).
This area is a small section, quieter than the main Hotel Zone beach areas. The government finally acquiesced to letting residents and locals in for free with proof of residency here in Tulum.
What is disturbing is the fee to enter this area. It is under the thumb of CONANP. Tourists are charged the full park fee of $415 pesos to enter. Even if they just want to go to the beach. That is absurd. It reeks of just a money grab.
They could easily post a guard at the stairs leading into the park by Mezzanine, and one down at the end of the road before the ruins. People that wish to just go to the ruins or beach could get a specific colored band. Maybe a small fee $40-$60 pesos at most.
A family of four wanting just go to the beach or ruins only must pay $1260 pesos for this. This is highway robbery. So the access is not “free” by any stretch of the imagination. I was under the belief that all of Mexico’s beaches are free and access can not be blocked. This is a terrible look.
Why don’t they have someone monitor social media to see all the complaints, from over processed food and drink to outrageous taxi fee’s to paying $415 just to walk a 3/4-1 mile road. Very sad
